In October 2020, Twitter suspended accounts purporting to be owned by black supporters of Trump. Twitter said that the accounts broke its spam and platform manipulation rules. A social media disinformation researcher at Clemson University, Daren Linvill said that more than two dozen of the accounts had already generated 265,000 retweets or Twitter mentions before suspension. Most of these accounts were not new, they had been created in 2017 but became more active between August and September. The decision by Twitter came days shy the November 2020 US presidential elections. The polls by then suggested that 10% of black voters were backing Trump.
