I never thought Poland would feel so much like home. But walking the streets of Warsaw, I felt something deep, something familiar. Born and raised in Chicago, I grew up surrounded by Poles without even realizing it—eating pierogi, kielbasa, and bigos at my friends’ houses, working for leaders like Judy Baar Topinka (my political mom) and Bob Kustra. Years later, standing in Warsaw, I called my mom and said: “Mom, the food here tastes just like Chicago.” She laughed: “Of course it does. You grew up with Polish families.
