Facebook Ban Policy

Facebook Ban Policy

Culliford, E. (2021, May 5). Facebook has six months to determine if Trump returns. Reuters. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/facebook-oversight-board-rule-trumps-return-facebook-2021-05-05/

According to Reuters Facebook oversight board upheld the platforms suspension of Trump but they were wrong to make the suspension indefinite. The platform was given six months to determine exactly the fate of Trump's account. Trump termed his suspension and banning across social media platforms as "a total disgrace" and sad that the tech companies would pay political price. The boards verdict was highly waited for because it would set pace for how the world's biggest social media companies will deal with rule breaking political leaders in the future. One of the board members, McConnell stated that indefinite penalties like the one Facebook has on Trump’s accounts do not pass the international or American smell test for clarity, consistency, and transparency. Also, the boards co-chair and former Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt stated that public figures should not be allowed to incite violence or create harm through their posts. However, Facebook cannot just invent new sanctions. The board added that Facebook existing policies for deciding when material is too newsworthy should be made public to the users, and that the policy governing how the platform handles novel situations were insufficient in preventing imminent harm.
