Kamarck, E. (2021, May 5). What will Facebook’s ban mean for Donald Trump’s future? Brookings. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2021/05/05/what-will-facebooks-ban-mean-for-donald-trumps-future/
After Facebook suspended Trump’s account after the January 6 insurrection, there has been speculations of his accounts fate. On Wednesday 5th May, 2021, Facebook’s oversight board upheld the decision to ban Trump from its platform. The situation with trump’s account is just the tip of the iceberg on the endless legal and ethical issues to come as the battle to balance the power of private social media companies with the stresses for free speech and the importance of the market place of ideas continue. The author notes that the three months Trump has not been on social media do not seem to have affected his standing with his die-hard followers who make up about 35-45% of the electorate. Trump’s favorability among the Republicans which stands at 80% as of April 2021, has come at a cost as trump has ruined his brand. The author final remarks are that, even if Trump will not come back to social media, his pronouncements will not be magnified by the mainstream media. Most of his content was covered by media because he was president and now that he is no longer president, that might change.
