Is Twitter a Perfect Platform to Influence Voters?
Morris, D. S. (2018). Twitter versus the traditional media: A survey experiment comparing public perceptions of campaign messages in the 2016 US presidential election. Social Science Computer Review, 36(4), 456-468.
According to Morris, both traditional media and social media platforms like Twitter were crucial in the attempts to influence voters. In the past, people would have taken with weight information shared on traditional media and ignore social media posts. However, things have completely changed and Donald Trump's race against Hillary Clinton proved that the political discourse and communication channels have changed completely. The authors affirm that campaign messages regarding candidates sent via Twitter resonates more with potential voters as much as the message sent via traditional media. Trump’s increased use of Twitter was a major determinant for his triumph during the 2016 elections.
