In a tweet, Trump attacked Elijah Cummings, another Democratic congressman, civil rights hero and chairman of the House Oversight Committee, accusing him of failing to take care of his Baltimore district. Trump described the city of Maryland as "a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess". Cummings, typically dignified throughout, sadly passed away in October and Trump was far more gracious in reacting to his death than he had been regarding John McCain.
Stracqualursi continues to state that the president had faced similar criticism after he attacked four Democratic congresswomen in a racially abusive language that was later condemned by a House resolution. Trump told four Democratic congresswomen of color to "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." Three of the four were born in the US, and the fourth is a naturalized US citizen.
