Trump on General Qassem Soleimani Situation

Buncombe, A. (2020, January 3). Trump tweets image of US flag as Pentagon confirms it killed Qassem       Soleimani. The Independent. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/trump-qassem-         soleimani-twitter-us-flag-killed-iran-iraq-latest-a9268491.html

Donald Trump put out his statement on his decision to order an airstrike that killed Iran's most powerful military leader, Qassem Soleimani. "General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more...but got caught!" Trump tweeted. "He was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number ... of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself." The president added, "While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!"

According to Buncombe, Trump responded on Twitter to US officials confirming the assassination of a top Iranian general, simply by tweeting an image of an American flag. Buncombe also states that the Pentagon said in a statement that it had carried out airstrikes against Qassem Soleimani, the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force. The operation also took out the leader of an important Iraqi militia force, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was travelling with Soleimani at the time.
