Trump Still Has Iron Grip on Republicans

Trump Still Has Iron Grip on Republicans

Lerer, L. (2021, May 12). Marooned at mar-a-Lago, Trump still has iron grip on Republicans. The New York Times - Breaking News, US News, World News and Videos.

The author states that regardless of being locked out of Facebook, being marooned in Mar-a-Lago and being mocked for an amateurish new website, Republican’s party capitulation to former president is clearer than ever. Despite the turn of events over the last few months, Trump’s loyalty persists. The author says that Trump’s loyalists either ignore, redefine, or tacitly accept the deadly attack on Congress on Jan 6th. Strategists from both the Republican and the Democratic parties are operating in two different realities and this is likely to define the country’s politics for years to come. Given how trump left office, Biden may face a broader challenge as a significant number of the US citizens are convinced that he is not a legitimate president. The current mood may affect even the faith in future elections. A CNN poll showed that a third of the American population including 70% Republicans say that Biden did not legitimately win enough votes to be the US president. The author says that Biden had predicted during the 2020 elections campaign that Republicans would have an epiphany the moment Trump is out of the White House and would revert to being the party he knew when he served as a senator. When Biden was asked about the Republicans in 2021, he said that he does not understand them anymore. Biden said that “I think the Republicans are further away from trying to figure out who they are and what they stand for than I thought they would be at this point.”
