Trump wanted Demonstrators Protected by the National Guard

Wolfe, J. (2021, May 12). Trump wanted troops to protect his supporters at Jan. 6 rally. Reuters.

A former Pentagon chief, Christopher Miller testified that Trump wanted the National Guard troops in Washington on Jan 6 to protect his supporters. Miller stated that on Jan 3, Trump had talked to him and asked whether the DC mayor had requested National Guard troops for Jan 6. Trump told Miller that he should fill the request, and that he should do whatever is necessary to protect demonstrators who were exercising their constitutionally protected rights. Representative Carolyn Maloney, the Democrat who chairs the committee, demanded answers from Miller on why the National Guard who were requested failed to arrive until hours after the Capitol was overrun. In response, Miller said that he feared that the presence of the National Guard troop to Washington before Jan 6 would send fears of a military coup and that Trump advisers were advocating martial law.
