President Trump Officially Recognizes Venezuelan Opposition Leader Juan Guaido

President Trump tweeted that he officially recognizes the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the Interim President of Venezuela. This is following protests by the people of Venezuela who have courageously spoken out against Maduro and his government and demanded freedom and the rule of law. Trump added that he will continue to use the full might of United States economic and diplomatic power to press for the restoration of Venezuelan democracy. Wagner et al. state that the president encouraged other Western Hemisphere governments to recognize National Assembly President Guaido as the Interim President of Venezuela, and promised to work constructively with them in support of his efforts to restore constitutional lawfulness.
According to Wagner et al., in a White House briefing, Trump warned that if Mr. Maduro used force against opponents, the United States could impose new sanctions, and did not rule out the use of military force to stop him. This was not the first instance where Trump administration has warned of a “military option” for Venezuela.
