Trump's Post's Before Social Media Ban Generated the Highest Engagement Rate

Alba, D. Koeze E & Silver J. (2021 Jun 7). What Happened When Trump Was Banned on Social Media. The New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/06/07/technology/trump-social-media-ban.html

The article highlights a series of events around Donald Trump’s tweets, before and after the social media ban. The author identifies January 6 incident as the major cause of Trump’s social media ban. It has also been noted that after the inauguration of Joe Biden as the new president of the US, Donald Trump’s statements has drastically reduced in the digital space. An analysis of Trumps social media posts before the social media ban recorded the highest engagement rate (millions of shares, likes and comments). In the sampled posts, it was noted that likes and shares dropped from 272,000 to 36,000 after the ban. It was also noted that Donald Trump’s tweets could sometimes attract the attention of both supporters and opponents. After the ban, most of Trump’s statements that had the highest engagement include those talking about the safety concerns of the US and the country’s policies especially from the previous regime. The trend indicates that the social media ban has had a negative impact Donald Trump’s political influence.
