Topix's membership is restricted to the U.S alone. To use the platform, one requires to sign-in. After sign-in, they get access to the news and features.

In 2004, Topix was co-founded by Bryn Dole, Rich Skrenta, Bob Truel, Tom Markson, Mike Markson, and Chris Tolles.
In March 2005, the Knight Ridder, Tribune Company, and Gannett media purchased a 75% share of Topix.
On April 1, 2007, it acquired the topix.com domain name.
In 2015, Topix launched a new entertainment-focused and quiz-based slideshow, Stars and Offbeat.
On June 26, 2016, Topix removed the human sexuality topic, which was one of its most popular topics, from its forums.
On December 20, 2018, Topix local news and forums were shut down.
